Diet & Incontinence

How to modify your diet to help improve bladder control.

What you eat affects how your body performs. So, it makes sense that some of the foods and beverages you consume might be affecting your bladder health. Let's take a look at how diet can come into play when managing and treating leaks.

Try to Reduce Bladder Irritants

Diuretics, like your morning coffee or acidic citrus fruits and spicy meals, can irritate your bladder, leading to more frequent leaks. You may be able to improve bladder control if you reduce or eliminate these diuretics from your diet:

  • Alcoholic and carbonated beverages
  • Caffeinated coffee and tea
  • Tomatoes
  • Citrus fruits and juices
  • Sugar, honey, and artificial sweeteners
  • Chocolate
  • Spicy food

All the good stuff, right? Cutting these foods out of your diet can be tough, but if it helps control bladder leaks, it's worth it.

Fire Up the Fiber

Constipation can lead to loss of bladder control, too, so consuming proper amounts of fiber is important. Try adding more of these high-fiber foods to your diet:

  • Oat bran
  • Applesauce
  • Non-irritating juices, including grape, cranberry, cherry, and apple
  • Water – the best beverage choice

Yes, we know, water isn't exactly a replacement for wine or coffee, but it's the ideal beverage choice for good bladder health. That could be worth picking a new favorite drink.

A Note about Liquids

Many people attempt to reduce leaks and trips to the bathroom by just drinking fewer liquids. It may seem like a good idea, but this can cause urine to become too concentrated – dark yellow and smelly. That concentration can irritate the bladder, potentially leading to a Urinary Tract Infection or even more leakage. It's important to stay hydrated throughout your day to help your health and longevity.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

There are many reasons to stay fit and watch your weight, and bladder leaks are one of them. Maintaining a healthy weight means less abdominal fat putting pressure on the bladder. So, if you've been putting off regular exercise or consistently eating unhealthy foods, now is the time to dust off your gym shoes and clean up your diet.
